About Elliott Digital
Technology should make things clearer, not harder.
Elliott Digital is an independent digital engineering company that starts with the organisation, the people and the problem before choosing technology.
When technology fits how people and services actually work, it makes things clearer. When it does not, it adds friction — so the starting point is understanding, not tooling.
Understanding first. Technology second.
Why we exist
Digital projects often start in the wrong place
Projects become frustrating when they begin with a tool, a platform or a feature list instead of the need they are meant to address. Elliott Digital exists to start somewhere else.
The usual order
- A tool or platform is chosen first
- The organisation is expected to adapt around it
- Complexity is added before the real problem is understood
How Elliott Digital works
- Start with the people, the organisation and the problem
- Understand what already exists and what genuinely needs to change
- Choose technology that fits — or say when it is not the answer
Understanding first. Technology second.
That means understanding what is happening now, what already exists and what genuinely needs to improve before deciding whether to build, adapt or leave the technology alone.
The human perspective
Why Elliott Digital cares about understanding people
Frontline experience of confusing, intimidating systems is why Elliott Digital starts by listening.
Michael Elliott
Founder / Elliott Digital
Professional and service experience around recovery, harm reduction and community services helped identify the recurring information, accessibility and digital-service problems that shaped Elliott Digital.
It also brought a practical understanding of how confusing or intimidating systems can feel when they do not reflect how people and services work in practice — which keeps the focus on listening, reducing friction and making technology useful to the people who have to live with it.
The company combines practical digital engineering with respect for lived experience and human judgement. The aim is not to make technology the centre of the story, but to make the right parts of a system clearer and more workable.
Experience that shaped the approach
- Recovery & harm-reduction services
- Community services
- Frontline / service experience
- Information & accessibility problems
- Practical digital engineering
Beliefs
What Elliott Digital believes
These are beliefs, not a method. How We Work covers how they play out on a project.
People first
Technology exists to support people and organisations, not the other way around.
Make complexity understandable
Good systems should reduce confusion rather than expose unnecessary technical complexity.
Build what is needed
Use appropriate technology and avoid features or over-engineering that do not solve the problem.
Human judgement matters
Automation can support people, but it should not quietly remove accountability from important decisions.
Evidence over assumptions
Learn from real problems, real use and real feedback before treating an idea as settled.
Build for ownership
Create maintainable systems that organisations can understand and live with over time.
The same belief applies whether the work is a website, a digital platform, an operational system, an automated workflow or an emerging idea — the technology should fit the problem, the organisation and the people involved.

Design is part of the human context
Technology changes how people work, find information and make decisions. Its design is therefore part of the human context, not just an implementation detail.
Good systems reduce friction, respect judgement and give organisations something they can understand, maintain and own. When technology is not appropriate, saying so is part of doing the work properly.
Start with the problem.
If you have a digital problem, service challenge or system that is creating friction, start with a conversation.
