Research

Exploring what technology can do — and where it should stop.

Elliott Digital investigates real operational, organisational and community problems before deciding whether technology is appropriate. We learn before we productise.

This is a thinking space — not a promise that every exploration becomes a product or service.

Why research comes first

Examine the problem before assuming software is the answer

Research is where problems are examined, ideas are tested and emerging technology is considered in context.

Understanding first. Technology second.

The aim is to understand what is happening, what evidence exists and what people need before deciding whether to build, adapt or stop. No academic claims, peer review or finished findings — just where the thinking currently is.

What we are exploring

Each theme is a set of questions, not a roadmap. The status says where the thinking is.

Exploring
Looking at the problem, the evidence and possible directions.
Investigating
Actively working through where and how technology helps.
Early Research
Initial work — more questions than answers so far.
Learning
Drawing on active projects and real systems.

Active theme

Responsible AI & Automation

Investigating

Investigating where automation genuinely reduces repetitive work and where human review must remain part of the system.

Questions we are working through

  • Understandable and controllable AI-assisted systems
  • Human approval and accountability
  • Auditability, escalation and override
  • Data boundaries and monitoring

Illustrative — the human step is where research keeps focusing.

    Exploring

    Event Safety & Risk

Exploring how event teams might make safety and risk information easier to structure, share and use.

    Questions include

    • Event safety workflows
    • Incident and risk information
    • Operational visibility
    • Structured reporting
    • Coordination and decision support

    Exploring

    Digital Service Design

Exploring how people navigate complex services and how organisations can reduce friction between teams, systems and digital touchpoints.

    Questions include

    • Service-user experience
    • Accessibility and digital inclusion
    • Clearer information flow
    • Connected service touchpoints

    Early Research

    Operational Intelligence

Early research into how operational information can support learning and better-informed decisions without implying predictive certainty.

    Questions include

    • Dashboards and reporting
    • Trend analysis
    • Meaningful KPIs
    • Decision support

    Learning

    Community & Recovery Technology

Learning from questions around community information, service navigation and digital infrastructure in sensitive settings.

    Questions include

    • Recovery and harm-reduction contexts
    • Public health and community conditions
    • Community assets and information quality
    • Responsible, accessible digital journeys

How we approach research

Useful, honest about uncertainty, grounded in consequences

Research should consider the security, privacy, accessibility and operational consequences of the systems being explored.

  • Start with the problem

Understand the context before choosing technology or assuming that software is the answer.

  • Test assumptions

Treat ideas as hypotheses until evidence, experience and feedback give us a better view.

  • Keep humans in control

Automation and AI can support judgement, but people retain accountability for important decisions.

  • Build responsibly

Consider security, privacy, accessibility and operational consequences early in the work.

  • Learn from real systems

Use evidence from practical delivery and active projects to improve future work.

  • Stop when technology is not the answer

Do not force software into a problem that can be solved more simply or clearly another way.

Where research fits

Research informs the rest — it is not a catalogue

Research can learn from active projects without turning them into promises. Recovery World stays an active Work project, not a Product; the wider questions belong here.

  1. Researchhelps us understand
  2. Servicesapply the thinking to client problems
  3. Productsturn repeatable problems into systems
  4. Workshows the ideas being built

Have a problem worth exploring?

If you are investigating a real organisational, operational or community problem, we can talk through what you are learning and whether technology is appropriate.
